In my Honors First Year Experience class, I had to opportunity to dive into culture. I explored culture and learned what it is about: it is individualized and dynamic. I had always thought of culture as something that didn't apply to me, but I could not have been more wrong. Culture is a part of everyone. While there are broad aspects of culture, such as belonging to the American culture, culture is also individual and comes from personal experience. I have my very own culture that is comprised from how I was raised and the experiences that I have had in life. Through the class, I was able to reflect on my culture and how it impacts how I view the world.

Culture can be dangerous, as it influences how one processes the world: it is the filter for understanding. Generalizations are how people sort the world, but if generalizations do not change with incoming information they become stereotypes that hinder understanding. In the class, I looked at the generalization that I use for understanding and how I could avoid turning the generalizations into stereotypes.
